Experience

Awards: Westmount Award for Academic Excellence Rutherford Scholarship UVic President's Scholarship University of Victoria Revue Award Gwladys and Gwen Downes Scholarship in Theatre UVic Undergraduate Research Scholarship I want to be a tutor for three reasons: 1) I love to work with young people and help them to better understand subjects that I am passionate about, and hopefully, increase their interest in these areas as well! 2) I believe this experience will help me in the professional world, as I plan to take a certification course to teach ESL overseas. 3) Finally, I believe that teaching is a wonderful way of learning from others. I am not doing any formal training in education (e.g. B.Ed.), nonetheless it is still something I want to be a part of, and I would love the opportunity to get experience as a teacher in any and every capacity I can. I am confident that as a tutor I can find that learning experience I am looking for. -In my twelfth grade, I tutored a friend of mine who was struggling with Social Studies, which dealt with 20th century history and economics. I helped him with studying, and writing essays for class. He received A's on his essays and scored well in the class overall. -I took English AP in grade twelve and scored a 4 on the final exam, earning me university credit in English. -I have recently been peer editing and coaching my mother's essay writing for a Childrens Literature course she is taking through Athabasca University. -From May to August 2010 I co-wrote and co-produced a travelling puppet show and puppet making workshop through the IslandLink Library Federation, taking it to children all over Vancouver Island. -I was published in the 2007 CBC Poetry Anthology, and the 2006 Calgary Stroll of Poets Anthology -Performed in 'Someone Who'll Watch Over Me' the winner of "Pick of the Fringe for Best Drama" in the 2009 Victoria Fringe Festival -I have excellent oral and written communication skills.

Hobbies

I love to read and write, and I do both voraciously. I keep several journals and a blog, and I read mostly non-fiction, about religion and philosophy--but I try very hard to read novels and plays too. I love to bake (I am a horrible cook but I am doing my best to get better). I'm always looking for new music in any and every genre, and I love to play around on Garage Band and make my own music (I think some of it is good--some of it, definitely not). I enjoy acting, singing, dancing, thinking, biking, running, walking, swimming, crawling, jumping, dancing, stretching, sleeping, and of course, teaching.
