Private tutor in Victoria, Canada

Education

Magistra Artium (Diploma) in Music Composition, 2009; candidate for PhD in Music Composition (ABD), 2015

Experience

At the moment, I am employed as a sessional instructor at the University of Victoria to teach music composition in individual sessions and to facilitate the composition seminars for all undergraduate composers. As a teaching assistant for undergraduate music theory courses at the same University, I have been able to implement some aspects of my work as a composer and researcher into the numerous lectures I have given. For the last five years, I have been the teaching assistant for a third year theory class, which allowed me to develop a way of integrating my own insights as a contemporary composer and researcher into the analytical discourse of the class. I have also been a teaching assistant for second year theory, and a course for second and third year music technology, which has contributed to my competency in teaching and advising students at an introductory and advanced level of music theory, history and technology. I have also been teaching private students over the last four years involving weekly individual lessons, mostly for New Music composition but also for jazz theory, harmony and arrangement, and general music history.

Hobbies

Aside from teaching, I am currently working on the completion of my PhD in music composition at the University of Victoria. My thesis piece was performed in March 2014, and I will be defending my dissertation in the spring of 2015. My main research interests lie in the areas of memory and contemporary classical music composition, and how New Media technologies have been impacting this relationship, with a particular emphasis on contemporary musical analysis. This research is directly tied into my work as a composer, wherein I investigate aspects of: memory, historical and cultural disintegration, and the meanings of performance-based concert settings.Outside my work as a musician, I am a sailor, a skateboarder, a hobby cook, and a traveller.I also have a strong desire to engage into political activities in my community: I have been active in various community-based groups on campus and in Victoria since 2009. Current activities include anti-racist and feminist work through different advocacy groups on my campus. Throughout the last ten years, I have been continually engaged with feminist, anti-racist and environmental activist groups.
